Painted Rug | Nani Marquina | 2012
|
The idea of a painted rug is not new, I remember Brigitte Rambaud commenting me about certain regions of east Europe having the tradition of painting rugs for economical reasons. Trompe d'oil is a technique not only applied in architecture but in quite different contexts, one of the most essential examples I know is the painting of the black stripes on a donkey to emulate a zebra in the Gaza zoo.
But Painted Rug is not trying to create a substitute, but to explore the possibilities of drop painting as a graffiti in a rug, a rug that during that action and because the action is transformed into a canvas.
Painted rug is a sketch of a rug that per se is a rug.
