On a trip to Iceland I read that in the past, criminals would escape to the centre of the island. It seems that there was an understanding among the population of Iceland that those in the centre were not persecuted. Logically, the centre is far from civilization, and the difficult conditions there, especially in winter, meant that most fugitives survived only a few years. The centre of Iceland is a wild and natural area, a place of freedom, a place removed from civilization that connects, for better or worse, to the original of humankind.
